Key Issues - Health
Health inequalities are an issue which affects people across the
spectrum. However in relation to the culturally and linguistically
diverse communities, the situation is further escalated as services
have not been culturally appropriate, which has consequently further
disadvantaged communities.
National statistics show that an Indian person is 50% more likely
to suffer from premature death related to coronary heart disease
than their white peer.
NBP has placed itself strategically to influence policy so that
it can address issues like these and reduce inequality.
National Floor Targets
The National floor targets focus on narrowing the gap in the following:
• Life expectancy in men and women.
• Conception rate in 15 –17 year olds.
Alongside these national targets, there are local indicators, reflecting
local priorities:
• Deaths from coronary heart disease.
• Admissions to hospital of under 15s for avoidable injuries
and poisonings.
The LSP are further prioritising conception rates in 15 –
17 year olds at the moment which is becoming a growing concern for
the African Caribbean and Pakistani communities.
